The History of the Botanical Garden of New York

The Botanical Garden of New York was founded in 1891 on the Belmont estate, a land that was transferred to Columbia University by Pierre Lorillard, a French immigrant who made a fortune in tobacco.

This is the botanist Nathaniel Lord Britton who built it, inspired by the Royal Botanical Gardens of England. His desire was already to offer New York one of the most beautiful gardens in the world. His wish was fulfilled and in 1967, the place even obtained the name of a historic monument.

Today, the Botanical Garden of New York is a place very frequented by New Yorkers but also by tourists from all over the world to admire the beauty of Mother Nature.

The Botanical Garden of New York can be visited in a few hours, but it deserves at least one day to fully enjoy the place. It is indeed composed of 27 different spaces , outdoor and indoor with greenhouses, which allows to keep plants all year round. Close to 100 hectares thus offer to visitors of passage. You can stroll freely or discover some must-sees in the garden.

Thus, do not miss visiting the Haupt Conservatory . This huge Victorian-style wrought iron greenhouse is indeed one of the most beautiful places in the garden. It houses tropical plants and watersheds populated with nenuphars. A real invitation to travel and relaxation.

How do I go to the New York Botanical Garden?

The Botanical Garden is located on Bronx River Parkway and Fordham Road in the Bronx district. To get there, nothing simpler! New York is well known for a developed public transport network. While it is by bus, metro or train, it will be easy to reach the garden. Everything depends on the entrance you arrive.

Main entrance: 2900 Southern Boulevard

  • By bus : lines Bx19, Bx12, Bx22, Bx9, and Bx17

The second entry (Mosholu): 2950 Southern Boulevard

  • By train : since Grand Central Terminal from Manhattan, via the line to Harlem, to Botanical Garden station (20 minutes drive only)
  • By metro : lines B, D, and 4 to Bedford Park Boulevard
  • By bus : the Bx26, Bx41, and Bx34 will deposit you directly in front of the entrance Mosholu.

Other entries

You can also access the Botanical Garden by the entrance Bedford Park Gate or by the East Gate . These two doors are, however, less used because they are subject to specific restrictions, especially at the time level.

At each of these entries you will find a free service bike rental allowing you to discover the places differently. The Botanical Garden is open all year from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, except for the following dates:

  • January to February : closing at 5:00
  • Closed on 28 November (Thanksgiving) and 25 December
  • 24 December : closure at 3 p.m.

Note : the Botanical Garden exceptionally opens some Mondays and holidays of the year (you can find the dates in question on the official website).

- Does the Botanical Garden have a dressing room?
There is no dressing room in the garden. Please note that strollers are allowed with the exception of the Conservatory, Discovery Center, Ross Hall, and Art Gallery. However, stroller parking is available. Large and large bags are not allowed in the Art Gallery’s enclosure.
