History of the Berlin Reichstag

The Reichstag Palace in Berlin was built at the end of the 19th century, during the creation of the first German Reichstag in order to shelter the Reichstag, the parliamentary assembly representing the German people. He took very early a vital political importance because of his role in the German parliamentary system; destroyed by a fire in 1933, the Nazi party took advantage of it to muzzle the political opposition and very harshly suppress the protesters - a memorial is dedicated to the latter, in the gardens of the Reichstag. During the Second World War, he was bombed and Soviet soldiers put graffiti in Cyrillic... perfectly preserved and still visible today!

After the war, the Reichstag was moved to the city of Bonn, capital of the German Federal Republic, and then again transferred to the Reichstag Palace after reunification. Great works were carried out to restore this historic monument, under the aegis of Sir Norman Foster : It is to him that we owe the famous glass dome all over the world, and under which the contemporary political destiny of this fascinating country is played, since the Bundestag – a modern reichstag filling – now sits.
