The most glacial inhabited place on Earth is in Russia
If you think winter has already arrived in your city, these photos of Oimiakon (or Oymyakon) may change your mind. With the lowest temperature of -67,8°C, recorded in 1933, and an average for January being -50°C, this village is the coldest inhabited place on this planet.
Located in the heart of Siberia, it usually takes two days' drive to Oimiakon from Iakoutsk, the capital of the Republic of Sakha, which has 300,000 people. The latter has average winter temperatures of -34°C, making it the coldest major city in the world.
Oimiakon residents face particular challenges that most parts of the world don’t know: there are very few indoor plumbing due to the frozen land, motor vehicles left outside the heated garages must always turn out to be fearful that they will become real freezers, and meat is the main food due to the inability of this region to grow crops.
The photographer based in New Zealand Amos Chapple visited this village of some 500 inhabitants and captured a series of beautiful pictures showing what life is in this extreme village. Chapple indicates that one of the main challenges for this project, apart from supporting the freezing and ferocious cold, was to use its camera. It was so cold that its lens and its zoom rings were sometimes freezing on site.
The photos are impressive and beautiful at the same time:
How much does he do to you? Do you now think it’s cold?
