A rainbow of ochre colors in China
A few 250 kilometers northeast of Kunming, the capital of the Chinese province of Yunnan, is located Dongchuan a rural area with the largest red earth in the world. Distributed to large terraced cultures, the unusual brown-red colour of Dongchuan comes from its rich iron and copper deposit. Presented in the warm and wet climate of Yunnan, the iron undergoes in the soil an oxidation to form iron oxide, which is naturally of red color . These oxides, deposited over many years, have gradually evolved to become the extraordinary reddish brown soil as can be seen today. Every year in the spring, when the lands of the region are ploughed for the benefit of agriculture, a large number of visitors and photographers go there to admire the patches of freshly returned red land and waiting to be planted. The surrounding green colours offer a superb panorama.
The red juxtaposed to orgasm emerald green and the buckwheat yellow gold under one blue sky produces one of the richest palette of colours rarely seen in nature.
According to the testimonies, the existence of Dongchuan was unknown from the outside world until the mid-1990s, when a Chinese photographer fell by chance on the site. The story tells us that the photographer kept the place secret and continued to publish photographs that impressed his audience. The details of the secret place were finally disclosed and now more and more photographers make the painful journey in the mountains to enjoy the experience of this amazing place.
