Anyone who tries to learn English remarks it very quickly: one does not greet in one way. We will not say the same sentence if we greet a friend or an unknown person. Here are some examples to understand this concept.

For a friend or a close friend, one can simply say:

  • Hello! ;
  • or Hi! ;

These formulations equivalent to "Hi !" in French. It is also the way of greeting a person we meet in a non-professional setting. It is all possible to use these phrases with a merchant·e or a passer·e.

Nevertheless, in a professional setting or in a standing place, the formulas of politeness are required. Thus, it is welcome to say:

  • Good Morning, when greeted in the morning;
  • Good Afternoon, when someone is greeted in the afternoon;
  • Or Good Evening and Good Night, if we greet someone in the evening.

If you want to say goodbye to someone, the process is the same. For example, in a friendly, family or casual setting, you can say:

  • Bye!, which is the most common way;
  • But it is also possible to say Good Afternoon, Good Evening and Good Night.

However, in a professional or standing environment, it will be better seen to use:

  • Have a good day! ;
  • Or maybe Have a good night! ;

The use of the verb have marks the politeness formula in English. We could compare this idea to its French equivalent: "Take a good evening!". However, and no matter how chosen to learn English, you will be explained that it is also possible to use these phrases in any context.
