Inspired by Starry Night by Van Gogh, this cycle track is released at night
The Dutch love of bicycles is well known: today there are more bicycles in the Netherlands than there are no inhabitants (18 million compared to 16.8). You will see that this has to stimulate the innovation of artists and engineers. Yesterday, 12 November 2014, first phosphorescent cycle track in the world , which is illuminated at night, was inaugurated in the city of Nuenen, near Eindhoven in the Netherlands. This city was not randomly chosen. This is where the painter Vincent Van Gogh lived in 1883. Called Van Gogh-Roosegaarde, the bike path was designed by Daan Roosegaarde and built by Heijmans. The track is composed of thousands of colored stones inlaid in the asphalt that take care of the daylight and light up green shades at nightfall.
The track was directly inspired by Van Gogh’s work Starry Night , known worldwide. The opening of the cycle track marks the beginning of the year 2015, the theme of which is Van Gogh . Indeed, 2015 will mark the 125th anniversary of the death of the Dutch artist (born 30 March 1853 in Zundert and died on 29 July 1890 in Auvers-sur-Oise), with a major international cultural programme: 125 years of inspiration.

The Netherlands also inaugurates the first global solar cycle track
At the same time, the Netherlands unveiled "SolaRoad", the first solar cycle track in the world , a revolutionary project that could allow to recharge bicycles and electric vehicles on the entire Dutch road network (140 000 km, 25,000 km of cycle tracks). Located in the north of Amsterdam on 70 metres, the cycle track produced, in 16 days of service, 140 kilowatts per hour, equivalent to 140 cycles of washing machines, says the project’s spokesman Jannemieke van Dieren. For now, the electricity generated is injected into the power grid but could also be used in the future to illuminate the public road. ( Source )
