The natural site of Badab-e Surt is a bit the Iranian Pamukkale
Badab-e Surt is a natural wonder located in the province of Mazandéran in northern Iran, 95 kilometers south of the city of Sari. The site consists of a series of landscaped terraces in travertine, a sedimentary rock formed over thousands of years by the deposit of carbonate minerals dissolved in water flowing from mineral hot springs.
The terraces of Badab-e Surt are caused by two distinct mineral sources with different natural characteristics, located at 1840 meters above sea level. The first source contains very salty water which flows into a small natural swimming pool. Its water is considered to have medicinal properties, including a remedy for rheumatism and certain types of skin diseases. The second source has a bitter taste and has an orange color mainly.
We find these travertine terraces in several places on earth. Other examples include Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park in the United States, Baishuitai Terraces in Shangri The Huanglong, both in China, and the most famous of them, Pamukkale, in Turkey. However, unlike the terraced thermal springs that have just been mentioned, which are mostly shades of white and blue, the natural terraces of Badab-e Syrte are bright orange and red . This is due to the presence of large amounts of iron oxide sediments.
