The 3 most beautiful hikes to do in Mykonos

Island of the party, the jet set and the beaches, hiking to Mykonos is a very different way to discover the most popular Cyclades. Keep in mind, however, that even with the best will of the world, Mykonos is not the ideal destination for walkers!

The hike in Mykonos is not really speaking the queen activity of the island... Faithful to its reputation, it is much easier to enjoy the “dream” beaches, festive evenings and the shopping atmosphere of Chora.

Level walking trails, Mykonos sits a little there. First of all, a very little agricultural past, which limits the presence of old mule paths so often borrowed to hike in the Greek islands. Also and more recently, the tourist development of the island, quite fulgurating, hence the constructions that bloom in every corner and the tar that covers more and more roads...

Still is it that Mykonos, as always in the Cyclades , is a beautiful island and offers to whom to wash its shoes some beautiful cycladic villages and splendid landscapes, on the bottom of the Aegean Sea. On site, mix the activities, because it is not worth spending a whole week of hiking!

In all cases, the lovers of calm will go to Mykonos from the beginning of spring, to the freshness of April-May, or late in the back-season, in October. In August, the party beats its full and when the meltem, the north wind, it is quite possible to walk in the middle of the day without suffering from heat.

The original success of Mykonos, the most sought-after Cyclades with Santorini, lies largely in the beauty of its beaches. Those in the south of the island, away from the north wind, are the most sought-after for hot sand, calm and transparent waters and nowadays, rows of parasols, beach bars and clubs where the real pulse of Mykonos is beat.

With this coastal path (Coastal Beach Hike), you can relax your legs while discovering some of the most famous beaches on the island. Beginning with Platis Gialos (bus from Chora to go and return), take a step on the beaches of Agia Anna and Paraga, before reaching the mythical Paradise Beach.

A small hike from Mykonos that really immerses you in the atmosphere, with its lot of lounge bars, clubs, restaurants and sun loungers. Think about your bathing suit and your wallet, there are plenty of opportunities to take breaks.

The scenery drastically changes between the heart of the summer, highly animated day and night, and the first and last weeks of the season, much quieter on slightly deserted beaches...

One of the most beautiful hikes in Mykonos is not on the island but on its small neighbour, Delos... This is more of a trip, but during which you will have to walk. Delos, uninhabited and forbidden off-site access, is an open archaeological site, among the most remarkable in Greece.

Indeed, the island was highly sacred during Antiquity, considered to be the center of the Cyclades and birthplace of the Apollo and Artemi twins! And according to the ancient Greeks, the archipelago would organize itself around Delos, from which its name. For this walk, you will have to go through a boat trip the day from Mykonos, the only way to access Délos.

The tour of the site allows you to first discover its most beautiful vestiges: the sanctuary of Apollo, the temple of Artemis, the Terrace of Lions, the Théâtre de Délos, the House of the Dauphins, etc... Before climbing the top of the island, the Cynthe, for a positive disappointment around the 112 m!

No difficulty therefore, even if the shadow is not present in general. The site is full of archaeological treasures, and one ends up accumulating a little distance from each corner until the time of the return to Mykonos.

  • Duration : about 3h
  • Distance approximately 10 km
  • Difficulty Average

A hike in Mykonos which takes place a little away from the general hustle of the island, the only one that truly covers a little distance on foot and crowds paths worthy of the Cyclades.

The start is in Ano Mera, a beautiful village with a typical cycladic setting, in the heart of Mykonos. Regularly connected by local buses in Chora, the capital, is also an excellent drop point to stay in a more peaceful setting.

Take the time to discover the alleys of Ano Mera and to visit the monastery of Panagia Tourliani before launching you on this fairly short route. Indeed, the path is without noticeable difficulty if it is not a few unclear passages, where alternate portions of old rural trails that recall a Mykonos completed, and portions of asphalt roads, impossible to avoid on the island.

The route leads to the beautiful beach of Lia, where you will find parasols and cafes for a little shade and a fresh drink, with its indispensable water jump!
