The 20 countries where we drink the most alcohol

Where do we consume the most alcohol in the world?

The last report (2014) of the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates an increase in alcohol consumption, with Eastern European countries leading up. Globally, the average individual over the age of 15 consumes more than 6 litres of pure alcohol per year 20 bottles of vodka.

The country that arrives first in this classification is nothing but Belarus with 17.5 litres of pure alcohol per capita and per year, close to a bottle of vodka per week. This nation of about 9.5 million inhabitants is widely regarded by Western countries as the last dictatorship of Europe, after being ruled by the autocrat Alexandre Loukachenko for the last 20 years. It is also the only European country with the death penalty. Belarusian society is more like a Soviet state, as in the past, than a free nation. That's enough to push to drink...

Here are the top 20 of this classification:

1. Belarus: 17.5 litres pure alcohol per year

2. Moldova: 16.8 litres

3. Lithuania: 15.4 litres

4. Russia: 15.1 litres

5. Romania: 14.4 litres

6. Ukraine: 13.9 litres

7. Andorra: 13.8 litres

8. Hungary: 13.3 litres

9. (ex-aequo) Czech Republic: 13 litres

9. Slovakia: 13 litres

11. Portugal: 12.9 litres

12. Serbia: 12.6 litres

13. (ex-aequo) Grenada (Caribbean): 12.5 litres

13. Poland: 12.5 litres

15. Finland: 12.3 litres

15. Latvia: 12.3 litres

15. (ex-aequo) South Korea: 12.3 litres

18. Croatia: 12.2 litres

18. (ex-aequo) France: 12.2 litres

18. (ex-aequo) Australia: 12.2 litres

It is thus noted that it is the countries of Central and Eastern Europe that consume the most alcohol per capita. However, it is noted that France consumed an additional 1.2 litres five years ago. Road prevention and campaigns against the dangers of alcohol are responsible for this fall in consumption in Western societies.

Americans, Germans, Irish, British and Spanish are now less attracted to alcohol than before, just like Italians, since they consumed 6.7 litres in 2010, compared to 10.5 litres in 2005.

Unsurprisingly, the countries that consume the least amount of alcohol are those where the Muslim confession is predominant: Pakistan, Libya, Kuwait and Mauritania pick up the palm of sobriety, with 0.1 litre per capita.
