The spectacular landings on the island of Skiathos
You may have heard of the Princess Juliana International Airport in Saint Martin, in the French Antilles and its dangerous approach to the beach of Maho Beach, which made him one of the most famous airports in the world. Apparently, it would seem that Saint Martin’s airport is not the only one in its kind...
The Skiathos airport on the Greek island of the same name is also short and narrow. landing runway being too short During the winter of 2013/2014, it was created an isthmus between the island of Skiathos and the peninsula of Lazareta that allows to reach both lands effectively and thus to obtain a greater space. Thus, the track is slightly more than 1.5 kilometer long, allowing the aircraft to land up to the size of a Boeing 757-200. The aircraft approach the runway from the west by flying over (not to say "shave") above a coastal road outside the airport perimeter. For this reason, it’s a very popular attrition track to watch the planes land and take off very close. Skiathos has often been nicknamed "the Greek Saint Martin".
Making an airplane at Skiathos is difficult and therefore requires experienced pilots who have completed additional training to operate there. In addition, the runway is leaned which gives the illusion that it is shorter since the southern end is masked to the approach of the ground. The landings can only be carried out by the captains... If a captain falls ill on a flight to Skiathos, the flight will be diverted to the nearby Nea Anchialos airport.
And here’s a video that summarizes some landings and takeoffs at the Skiathos airport:
