Optical Illusion: Sørvágsvatn Lake appears to overlook the ocean

Between Scotland, Norway and Iceland, the magnificent Sørvágsvatn lake located north of Vágar Island in the Faroe Islands offers an impressive illusion of optics.

With a size of 3.4 km2, Sørvágsvatn Lake (or Leitisvatn), the largest lake in the Faroe Islands archipelago offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean. On the edge of cliffs, it seems to overlook the ocean more than a hundred meters, while it is actually only 30 meters away. The position of the camera and the angle chosen gives a beautiful perspective to the cliché which is however totally false.

For proof, a video using Google Earth demonstrates the superchery:

A photograph taken from another angle turns out to be much less spectacular
