Many cities or dwellings have been built on the cliffs for a variety of reasons, but it is especially for the Defensive benefits that they were built in such a way. A village on a promontory overlooking the sea has a defensive advantage of choice and is almost impossible to attack from the sea. In the same way, a city perched on a steep hill was built so to defend itself from its terrestrial assailants or to place itself at most close to a strategic point such as a river.
