Between volcanoes and cafés, Lake Atitlán is according to the famous German geographer Alexander von Humboldt, "the most beautiful lake in the world".
Nestled in the heart of Guatemalan mountains, Lake Atitlán is a must-see destination for any trip to Guatemala. It impresses not only by its size (a 130-kilometre area), but also and especially by its environment: it is surrounded by 3 majestic volcanoes, and many reliefs. It is also the deepest lake in the region with more than 350 metres.
This lake, described by many as the most beautiful lake in the world, was formed by an important volcanic eruption of more than 80,000 years. Today, you can admire three volcanoes, the highest of which is 3500 meters tall. The majestic and populated terrains of forests, coffee and cocoa plantations, offer luxurious and different colours depending on the period of the year.
Tips for visiting Lake Atitlán
Located 3 hours’ drive from Guatemala City Airport or two hours’ drive from the sublime Antigua, Lake Atitlán is a must-see for your trip. Little speciality here, we're moving by boat!
Thus, you will arrive in the main city by car, Panajachel and can go to the port to discover the ten villages that populate the shores of the lake. If Panajachel is the less charming and most touristic city, it is recommended to go to Santa Cruz la Laguna if you want peace, San Marcos to enjoy massages, yoga classes, and a relaxing atmosphere, and Santiago Atitlán or San Juan for the artisanal and authentic side of Mayan villages.
To reach each village, you will board a “lancha”, the local boat, and enjoy a superb walk, on this lake located 1500 meters above sea level!
What to do at Lake Atitlán?
In addition to a visit to the most typical villages such as Santiago or San Juan, you can also measure yourself to one of the volcanoes: indeed, the San Pedro, which peaks at 3000 meters, can be the subject of a day or night climb to take full view of it! There are also many activities: on water, kayaking, paddle and swimming in the lake’s emerald waters are at the rendezvous.
On the farmland, the visits of handicrafts, coffee or cocoa plantations and other hikes will ensure a refreshing and authentic trip to Guatemala.
