Small island Cyclades in Greece with an area of 32 km2 and a population of only 676 permanent inhabitants, Folégandros is between Athens and the Crete, Milos and Sikinos. The island presents itself as a barren rock with sharp stops, laid in the middle of the Aegean Sea. Peated from the Phoenicians, dominated by the Venetians in the Middle Ages, the island of Folegandros was the funest theatre of the deportation of opponents to the regimes of the Colonels dictatorship between 1967 and 1974.

There are few villages and only one large road on the island: Karavostási (the port), Chóra or Folegandros (the capital), and Áno Meriá. This is our presentation of these three villages where to sleep in Folégandros.

Karavostasis

This is probably the first city you will see from the island, the one from which one arrives by ferry . The port is located on a pontoon between two beautiful beaches – Vardia and Chochlidia - where you'll probably immerse yourself in warm and turquoise waters. Where to stay in Karavostasis? The whole village is surrounded by hotels where to sleep, but think to book in advance, especially during the summer season. Access to the beach of Vardia is made by a staircase descending from the cliff, and offers a lot more charm than its neighbour Chochlidia, located in the back of the marina.

Chora

The city of Chora is the place to stay in Folégandros to enjoy the best of a spectacular view: built at the top of a steep cliff, the village gives a view to cutting the suffering on the sea and the no man’s land stretching west, a deserted and arid landscape depicted by the winds. The old center and the small public squares, where enjoying a glass under a flowery pergola will not fail to seduce you. A cross path among a few donkeys – if you are lucky – allows you to make a small ascent to the Panagia of Chora (the church of Chora). Chora has a good hotel offer to stay in Folégandros before hiking the next day. In the evening, enjoy taverns to taste the delights of Greek cuisine.

Áno Meriá

Did you know the mills on the island before looking for where to stay in Folégandros? It is in Áno Meriá that one sees once again the shrewd landscape of the island and an atmosphere out of time, as if capitalist modernity had not passed here. Staying in Áno Meriá allows you to go for the beautiful beaches of Livadaki and Galifos, on the south coast. Between Chora and Áno Meriá, you will see the three abandoned mills that you see on all the travel blogs on the island. Those who love religious buildings can come to contemplate the nearby churches: the church of Saint-George, the church of Saint-Pantelimon. Do not miss the twilight when you are at the top of a cliff: the incandescent sky gives different lights every night!
