You who leave for the Greek islands, discover those of the western coast: our guide to find out where to stay in Corfu?

The capital of the eponymous small island, a few blocks from Albania and the west coast of Greece, the city of Corfu – Kerkyra in Greek – is located in the middle of the eastern coast of "Emerald Island". Corfu, the capital of an island taking the form of a horse pass in the Ionian Sea, has only 39,487 permanent inhabitants distributed on a hillside over 41,9 km2 but the population inflates in the summer period where huge cruise ships flock to the port every day. Finding accommodation in Corfu can therefore be expensive. Founded in the 6th century BC, Corfu was the first Greek city under the Roman Empire and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. The historic heart of the island, the city of Corfu is a must-see for all visitors who have come to visit the island to escape from daily routine and stress.

From the tourist center with its fortress and the liston – the , to the alleys of the old Corfu, the linen that hangs on the windows reminding the Italian villages, and for cause: the island was a possession of Venice for nearly 400 years! This is in which quarter to stay in Corfu.

In the alleys of the historic city, many colourful facades of yellow, white, pink or ochre are erected above the ground, where groceries, dyes and popular shops are crossed: bakery, butchers, jewelers with metal ovens, the whole soul of a popular Greek village. The streets are full of bougainvilliers and orange trees, a relaxed atmosphere exhales there as in a small Mediterranean village. Many historical monuments are concentrated in the old town, especially around Spianada Square. Don’t miss the Corfu Archaeological Museum, a night break at the Liston – Eleftherias Square – to visit the Church of St Spyridon, the old fortress and the monastery of Kanomi. At the edge of the paved alleys in the Venetian style, you will find many bars and small cafes where to appreciate the popular life that seems to take place peacefully, as if time had stopped. There will be few hotels, however, where to stay in the old city.
