A trip to the capital of the United States? Discover with us in which neighborhood we have to stay in Washington!
Otherwise known as Washington District of Columbia – to avoid confusing it with the state of Washington – the American Federal Capital is an independent city of 646,449 intra-muros inhabitants for an area of 177 km2 and 5.8 million inhabitants throughout the urban area. It is the 7th city of the United States and the headquarters of many American political institutions: the White House, the Capitole, the World Bank, the American Federal Reserve (known as the FED), the Supreme Court and 176 embassies. As often in the United States, the price of a sleeping accommodation in Washington will be rather high.
The neighbourhoods Washington most interesting are probably National Mall, Dupont Circle, Anacostia and Adams Morgan. Each of them – and others such as Southwest, Waterfront, Capitol Hill, Penn Quarter, Foggy Bottom or Georgetown – offer a special atmosphere. This is where to stay in Washington.

Located on the banks of the Potomac River, National Mall is the area of must-see sites, very touristic. There are many buildings, museums, monuments and memorials: the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Second World War memorial, the Washington Monument, the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, the White House and the Capitol, etc. This institutional district is home to all major museums in the country, from the National Museum of American History, to the National Gallery of Art, as well as the National Air and Space Museum. In addition to these world-famous monuments, a gigantic eponymous park stretches from east to west, from Capitole to Lincoln Memorial. It is therefore the area to be preferred to stay in Washington if you visit the city in a short time. On the other hand, staying at National Mall will be expensive.

Capitol Hill is the district of Washington’s institutions: there is obviously the Capitole, which hosts the Congress of the United States, but also Victorian architecture houses of the 19th century, a number of shops where shopping and terraces can be restored. Staying in Washington in the Capitol Hill district will be expensive, with the population being quite easy. Finding cheap and comfortable accommodation in Capitol Hill would be like looking to buy a cheap apartment in the 16th arrondissement of Paris: impossible!
