Visit the city of Reims on the Champagne and Grand-East route? Here are the best areas to stay in Reims!
With almost 200,000 Rémoi(es) – exactly 183 113 inhabitants in 2016 – Reims ranks 12th among the most populous cities in France, behind Rennes and Lille and is the most populous commune in the department of La Marne (51). Known as the “City of Kings” and the “City of the Sacraments”, the city was of major importance in the history of France: for more than a thousand years, the kings of France were crowned there, in the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Reims, of Louis-le-Pieux (816) to Charles X (1825). The historical and cultural heritage of Reims is one of the most important in the country and the city contains many historical monuments. Three of them are listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List: Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Palais du Tau and the former Royal Abbey of Saint-Rémi. And of course, the city has a major tourist attraction, capable of intoxicating until disinhibition and grivoiserie: we speak of Champagne, of course!

Downtown
As usual, you are recommended to aim the city centre to sleep close to the must-have buildings and the heart of the social activity of the cities. As far as Reims is concerned, you can visit the Palais du Tau – listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List – the Museum of Fine Arts, the Carnegie Library, the Opera and the Cirque de Reims.
Is that all? Of course, you will not miss the building for which everyone comes to visit Reims: the Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral ! Built between 1211 and 1345 in a Gothic style – one of the most impressive Gothic art monuments in Europe – it is known to have been the place of the priest of the kings of France for 1,000 years, from the Carolingian Empire in the 9th century. Raised by the flames of the German bombings during the First World War, she lost her wooden roof – this sad spell is not exclusively reserved for Notre-Dame-de-Paris Cathedral, alas... – and the melted lead poured into the gargouilles and destroyed the Palais du Tau. Destroyed at 85% – like the city of Saint-Lô in the Channel on June 6, 1944 – the city centre was rebuilt after the Armistice of 1918. If you choose the city center to stay in Reims, you will enjoy a position you can no longer central to visiting everything on foot.
