Want to visit Provence? Discover the Phocean city by finding the best area to stay in Marseille!
Prefecture of Bouches-du-Rhône and second city of France by its population of 861 635 inhabitants, Marseille – also says the Phocean city – is one of the jewels of Provence: popular atmosphere, sun all year round, beaches, splendid calanques with turquoise waters, massive limestone and garrigues, picturesque neighborhoods and multicultural influences: it makes good living in the Mareillaise region. Accommodation in Marseille can be expensive or cheap according to the borough and the offer of accommodation: apartment in the living room ( Airbnb ), hotels, hostels...
The Phocean city is rich in a breathtaking historical and cultural heritage and human occupation dates back to Paleolithic, between 27,000 and 19,000 before our era. Since Antiquity, the city has a strategic place in the Mediterranean basin thanks to its commercial port, industrial and tourist infrastructure. If you're looking for a place to sleep in Marseille, here's where to stay.
Old Port

As often in the cities, the centre is the most interesting. The Old Port of Marseille is a life by the water close to everything: restaurants, cafés, historical monuments, neighborhoods and museums. Accommodation in the Old Port is an ideal point to go on an urban hike without taking the metro, from the Canebière to the street of Rome, from the street of the Republic to the Cart or on the cornice of the Pharo. And then the Old Port, it’s also the opportunity to taste freshly arrived fishes at the shout: the fish-cream market, Monday to Sunday morning is a must in the neighborhood.

La Canebière

We continue in the city centre: the Canebière, an artery of the long city of a kilometre that cannot be missed. A bit loud, it has the advantage of being always active and dynamic. In the morning, the daily market, the shops and its festive atmosphere of the evening makes the whole city regroup. Brenetic atmosphere assured! Run if you hate noise, but otherwise it’s a nice neighborhood where to stay in Marseille, to be close to everything.

La Plaine et le Cours Julien

A true institution for young people and students in Marseille, it is the bobo and popular corner where we love the art engaged in all its forms (theatre, painting, photography, music, drawing, etc.) and think of the alternatives of the future by drinking coffee or organic tea. It’s caricature but it’s a bit like that, and it’s good to hum this creative soul and this seed of artist that grows in the area. In the evening, we gather on Place Jean Jaurès – even the administrative names are marked to the left – renamed the Plaine to enjoy good drinks and meals on the terrace. Central, festive and good living: our best place to sleep in Marseille (we're probably bobo too!).

The Cart

For an authentic, picturesque and historical stay in Marseille, aim at the Cart. Not to walk in the footsteps of the "Best Life" series – which has not even been toured in the neighborhood – but because sneaking around in this maze of popular streets, stunned, buried, beard of yellow, red, orange and ochre is always a pleasure in the eyes. The cars don’t pass there, which gives the feeling of being in a small town of Midi de la France. Numerous small bars and cafés stir up alleys, where you can enjoy a terrace with fountain and olive trees, the typical charm of Provence under the sound of cicadas (when there are trees...). To sleep in Marseille, stay in the Basket without hesitation if you are looking for calm.
