Third city Romania after Timisoara and Bucharest Cluj-Napoca is located northwest of the country, 170 kilometres from the Hungarian border. Traversed and wet by the Someșul Mic River, the city houses 324 576 inhabitants (2011) and is the main economic hub of northern Romania. A region with great tourist potential, Transylvania – rich in history – has an economy focused on information and communication technologies, on tourism, finance, education and research. It is little to say that after her communist history, she quickly jumped into the market economy on foot. Because of its rich and enlivened history, Cluj-Napoca has two large Romanian and Hungarian language communities. This is the most important cultural centre of the Hungarian community in Romania. Cluj-Napoca city centre is an open-air museum. Originally occupied by the Celts, the city was a colony of the Roman Empire. The first medieval mention of Cluj-Napoca dates back to 1167, under the name of Castrum Clus, a small fortified city. It was on the ruins of the ancient city that the city centre was built. Finding accommodation in Cluj-Napoca can be expensive: a rent costs between 400 and 600 €, especially near the university areas.
In the centre, you can visit several museums retracing the arts and history of the country and the city: Art Museum, Transylvania Ethnographic Museum, Transylvania National Museum. Don’t miss the main square, the Piata Unirii, the Union Square. It is the central square, the core of the medieval city and the heart of the city. With its dimensions – 220 meters long and 160 meters wide – it is the largest medieval square in Eastern Europe. South of the city centre, don't miss the Botanical Garden Alexandru Borza, a lung of greenery spread over 10 hectares, cultivating more than 10,000 species from all over the world. Mărăști

Mărăști is located northeast of the historic city centre. It does not have its aura in terms of historical and cultural buildings, but is considered an important residential area, with about 30,000 inhabitants. Therefore, it is similar to a quiet area where to stay in Cluj-Napoca, and not far from the city centre. Take a tour at the Mărăști cinema, now the first free cinema in Cluj. The church of Saint-Pierre, built in neo-Gothic style in the half of the 19th century, is to be seen at the turn of your walks. To make your shopping, head to the Mărăşti Market, a market where you will find everything. If you come with a family or look for a quiet area, it is a good area to stay in Cluj-Napoca.

Gheorgheni

Gheorgheni, is a green area east of the city centre, stretched between the Piaţa Baba Novac square and Alexandru Vaida-Voievod Street, and is accessed to the eponymous lake, a former fishing site from the Middle Ages, now transformed into a large leisure site. Accommodation in the east of the neighbourhood offers more tranquility, between green spaces, lake and universities.
