Le Haut Val de Cagnes
The Cagnes Height District is the place where the Roman Legions settled under Antiquity: it is an ancient Roman oppidum, a medieval town where a castle overlooking the sea stands. The medieval period in Cagnes-sur-Mer is visible by the fortified castle in Donjon, built from 1309, a fortress that became a museum in 1946 and classified as a historical monument since 1948. It was built by Rainier I Grimaldi (1267-1314), seigneur of Cagnes-sur-Mer, on Greek and Roman ruins. The property of the Grimaldi family until the French Revolution, it was only taken over by the municipality in 1939. Today it is a museum of modern art and ethnographics, to be visited inevitably if you like history.
The small medieval village and its monuments having crossed the ages, will be the subject of beautiful walks in a quiet area. For example, Notre-Dame-de-Protection chapel offered by the White Pénitents in the 16th century.
