In which quarter house in Ajaccio?

Visit the Île-de-Beauté, its shredded coasts, its beautiful beaches and the mountains: this is in which area to stay in Ajaccio!

Largest city of island Corsica Ajaccio is the prefecture of the department of Southern Corsica, located in the centre and on the west coast of the island. The birthplace of Napoleon I (1769-1821), Ajaccio is nicknamed "Imperial City" and "City of Coral". With a population of 68,462 inhabitants and 105,000 people in the urban area, it is also the largest city south of Metropolitan France. Situated on the western side of the island in the Gulf of Ajaccio, its rugged coastline offers numerous coves and beaches, between the Gravona and Point of the Parata including the Sanguinary Islands.

Looking for a place to sleep in Ajaccio? Its Mediterranean climate, the hospitality of the Corsicas – if we respect their island – and the 2,726 hours of sun a year will surely charm you. This is in which area to stay in Ajaccio.

Old town

The old town stretches on a small urban strip that no one misses when arriving at Ajaccio: the port. This is where fishermen’s boats, tourist boats (notably the cruises for the Sanguinaires , excursions on natural reserves Scandola and Girolata and Bonifacio visit ), sailboats, yachts, ferries and cruise ships.

Next to the marina is the Place Foch , essential for its daily morning market, up to 1 p.m.: charcuterie, cheese, fruits and vegetables, nougat. The guard's rotation at 7 p.m. every Thursday of July and August will make you leap in the past in the living time of Napoleon I.

Along the way Course Napoleon and rue du Cardinal Fesch, the district shows its commercial soul: this is where social activity is breaking its full range, between shops, bars, cafés, glaciers and restaurants. The Fesch museum and its library, Place Foch, the Citadel and its ramparts, Notre-Dame de l’Assomption Cathedral , the National Museum of the Bonaparte House – where the baby was born in 1769, who was to become 30 years later, First Consul of the Republic, then Emperor -, the Chemin des Crêtes and the Plage Saint-François , are the immanquables of the old quarter.

This area where sleeping in Ajaccio is the most touristic: the most frequented and the most expensive.

Casone

We reach the west of the city and on the heights by surveying the Grandval Course: the Casone district , where the statue of Napoleon Bonaparte sits majesticly at its memorial, is an easy, bourgeois, quieter area where to stay in Ajaccio.

In fact, we'll be quieter than to the ports. It’s a good drop to find the Trail of the Crêtes and climb up to the heights to observe a breathtaking view of the city and the bay. The Boulevard Albert 1er offers many shops and restaurants, not the Grande Roue d’Ajaccio, looking at the sea.

The beaches to the west

Want to stay next to Ajaccio to be close to the beaches? Do you have little interest in tourist monuments to the glory of tyrants and the First Empire? Direction west, towards the beaches and the archipelago Sanguinary Islands .

Continuing along Albert Boulevard 1st and then Lucien Bonaparte Course, you will arrive Barbicaja , Scudo and Vignola .

This long road to the Genoese tower of the Parata (from 1550-1551) with its panoramic sea view offers many places to sleep between the mountains and near Ajaccio. A beautiful turquoise sea weaves the beaches of fine and white sand in Barbicaja, a place also very appreciated by the locals.
