In which city house in Rhodes?

If you go to Greece, in the largest island of Dodecanese, discover our guide to the best cities to stay in Rhodes!

The Ninth island of the Mediterranean Sea and the largest island of the Dodecanese, Rhodes is one of the most touristic islands of Greece, just 17.7 kilometers south of the Turkish coast. Its population is 115,490 permanent inhabitants, spread over 1,410 km2, but is overwhelmed during the summer period: staying in Rhodes and living on site can be expensive in the summer, counting 600 € per month in the off season and 900 € per month in the summer for accommodation. The Mediterranean climate, its landscapes, its beaches and its culture make it one of the major tourist destinations at the borders of Europe. Atabyria – the ancient name given to Rhodes – is populated from Antiquity and has an impressive historical and cultural heritage, a mosaic of cultures at the crossroads of civilizations: the island was Golden, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, under the domination of fascist Italy, Nazi Germany and under British protectorate and has been Greek only since 1948.

Between Rhodes (city) and seaside resorts, including Faliráki, Lindos, Kremasti, Haraki, Pefkos, Archangelos, Afantou, Koskinou, Kiotari, Embona (Attavyros), Paradisi and Trianta (Ialysos), there are no magical places to sleep: here is where to stay in Rhodes.

Rhodes

The capital of the island is located in the north-east, with a population of 49,541 inhabitants. The old medieval town, surrounded by the ramparts of the Knights of Rhodes and Dimokratias Boulevard, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988. Most of the tourist attractions of Rhodes are located in the medieval city. The district offers a maze of small streets where to wander and historical monuments such as the archaeological museum, the modern art museum, the Grand Master Palace or the Roloi Clock Tower.

Don’t miss visiting the Acropolis of Rhodes, a unique vestige of ancient Greece. To eat, many restaurants and bars have gabled on the street. If you travel with friends, the neighborhood also offers bars and clubs to celebrate. A long beach surrounds the northern end of the city, with the Aquarium and the location of the ancient Colosseum of Rhodes, near the Fort of Saint-Nicolas. The city of Rhodes has many hotels where to sleep in Rhodes and many green spaces where to relax in the shade and obviously restaurants where to taste Greek cuisine.

Lindos

Located southeast of the island, Lindos is one of the jewels of the island. But who also attracts a lot of travellers, Lindos is very busy. The city is recognizable to its typical white houses, known for its acropolis dating from the 4th century BC, dedicated to the goddess Athena. The beach of Lindos allows you to swim in a hot and crystalline water, taking advantage of a breathtaking view of the Acropolis. In the south of the village, enjoy the beach of the bay of Saint Paul, wet by the clear and calm water of a vast natural swimming pool, described as one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Rhodes: wait to see a lot of people in the summer! Book your hotel in advance to sleep in Lindos, the affluence can be important.

South of the island

Do you want to go out of the beaten paths and see the authentic Rhodes, away from mass tourism? Get away from the sights and seaside towns where the decks touch to discover almost deserted beaches, a wild nature much less exploited and still typical villages: south. Guests can rent accommodation in Gennadi (on the south east coast), Plimmiri or Macheria to stay in Rhodes in less crowded areas and feel closer to the traditional and popular population, landscapes and nature.
