The north is a third of the island’s population. It is the Pelee Mountain – a peak of 1,397 metres – that makes this region known all over the world: many hiking trails wind up the slopes of the volcano. Nature lovers will be filled because it is luxuriant and tropical, but it is also because precipitation is more important than in the south. La Pel montée is the incontournable place to stay in Martinique if you love nature. There are many paths, including the one on the heights of the Red Morne. At the foot of the volcano is the city of Saint-Pierre with its black sandy beaches. Bars, terraces and restaurants are on the seafront, next to the Centre for the Discovery of Earth Sciences and the Volcanological Museum of Franck Pellier. Choosing to stay in Saint-Pierre will offer you peaceful days in the midst of a lush nature.

In the centre-east, don’t miss the fishing village of Tartane if you like seafood restaurants and popular villages whose authenticity has been preserved. Not far, the Caravelle peninsula – 12 kilometers long – is the oldest part of Martinique with Sainte-Anne. This National Natural Reserve features hiking trails that will lead you to the edge of a mangrove, without failing to pass through the ruins of the Dubuc Castle, an old "habitation" of settlers. This area where to stay in Martinique is ideal if you arrive or have to take the plane back to Fort-de-France or if you want to enjoy small corners of paradise away from the South’s tourist affluence.

It is in the south of Martinique that we find most of the beaches where the millions of tourists enter the island all year round, between the Anses of Arlet to the west and the Cap Chevalier to the east. However, it is possible to find peaceful and uncommon beaches to rest under a coconut tree. If you like tropical beaches, stop at the Anse des Salines, the Anse Michel, the Anse Dufour or the Grande Anse d’Arlet: a place where you come to celebrate your feet in the sand until the end of the night.
As you go back a little, the Three Ilets is one of the most frequented cities in Martinique: the town has preserved a picturesque charm. There you will find the marina, nautical activities, shops of the "Creole Village", a golf, bars and restaurants, night clubs and a casino. Not far from Fort-de-France Bay, enjoy the artificial beaches of Pointe du Bout, its warm waters and countless hotels.
