Natural gem of Thailand and second largest island of the country, Samui – or Ko Samui – is one of the major tourist destinations, renowned all over the world for its white sand beaches lined with coconut trees, corals and warm waters, turquoises turning green according to light. With an area of 252 km2, the island is populated by 62,500 permanent inhabitants but the tourists who flock to it – the pharangs as they are called in Thai – make the population grow throughout the year. Located only 35 kilometres northeast of Surat Thani, Koh Samui is located in the centre of an archipelago of 85 islets, comprising the Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park (the islands of the golden bowl), including Koh Pha Ngan and Koh Tao. The island is covered by an indomitable tropical jungle, surrounded by a 51-kilometre coastal road. Nathon, the main city of the island, is a fishing port in the southwest, represents the island’s economy engine. Lipanoï and Nathon

It’s at Nathon that you will arrive by boat at the landing. Already, Thais will offer you to take you to the hotel in tuk-tuk. Always avoid taking the first come tuk-tuk, having a backlash to not get scammed. The west coast of the island is the least tourist part of Koh Samui. Travellers flock, but do not stay there and cities are populated by locals.

Bo Phut

Located northeast, Bo Phut is one of the most frequented areas of Koh Samui. Very popular, the village is typical, and is close to the airport.

The small fishing village – The Fisherman’s Village has become a major tourist attraction of the island. Mae Nam

Mae Nam , north of the coast, it is above all a long and splendid strip of sand. Its relative distance from the road gives it a small, wild side, although there are – as often in Thailand – many hotels, resorts and bungalows where to stay in Mae Nam. There is also a little more background than elsewhere, which allows you to swim all year round. The roads of the interior of the land offer a singular cachet, in lush tropical vegetation.

Chaweng and Lamai

Here's the best for the end, if you like festive areas: Chaweng and Lamai are the two most famous beaches on Koh Samui Island.

Chaweng offers a sandy cord that extends over 7 kilometers in front of the Ko Mat Lang islet, between the homonymous lake and the beach. Many beach bars, restaurants where to eat feet in the sand and resorts where to sleep are in Chaweng. Careful, the beach is beautiful – turquoise water lagoon with the mountains plunging to the ocean to the south – but it is literally stormed every day. If you find this ambience of the Valais coast in July, you will not be unpleasant, you will nevertheless enjoy a very lively nightlife! Many hotels where to sleep in Lamai for cheap are on the seafront. In Lamai, enjoy visiting Wat Lamai Folklore Museum and the temple of the city, close to the sand!
