The Citadel

Old nearly 500 years old, the Citadel was built by the Genoese in 1539 – the walls date from 1589 – to protect the city from external attacks – and has five bastions and an emblematic monument of the city: the Porte Génoise . The Citadel overlooks the sea and the surrounding Corsica massifs. The Place de la République is the central square of the city, surrounded by many bars and restaurants. The shops, in the daytime, have brought their customers – sometimes until midnight in the summer – while at night, a whole new category of people fills the alleys: the noctambules in the spotlight of wine bars, lounge bars, traditional bars where to listen to Corsican polyphonies and discotheques where to dance all night. The old town is accessed through the rise of the Porte Génoise, where a unique architectural heritage is unveiled to passers-by. Palombaggia
