On the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, the restaurant El Diablo cooks its food on a grill powered by the heat of a volcano!

What is more natural than organizing a barbecue party on a volcano? Aunt restaurant El Diablo , located on the island of Lanzarote In the Canary Islands, chefs cook food thanks to the heat produced by a volcano.

El Diablo is a unique restaurant where chefs have free and direct access to a volcano. Of course, the volcano does not spit, in which case it would be difficult to eat quietly. The crater looks rather like a well, from which volcanic heat emerges from the depths of the Earth.

And it is precisely this heat (includes between 450 and 500°C all year round) that the creators of El Diablo Take advantage. Long before the restaurant was created, visitors to the volcanic region (including the Timanfaya National Park ) came to taste a dish of sardines and wine. But in 1970, César Manrique, a local artist, decided to create an official restaurant in the region. Thus, with the help of architect Eduardo Cáceres and artist Jesus Soto, a giant grill was built on the ground to use the incredible heat under the surface of the Earth. This is how the restaurant El Diablo was born. The grille is used to prepare several meat, poultry, and fish dishes that are served at the restaurant tables.

The construction was not easy of course. This whole heat on the surface in no way allowed to dig foundation trenches. So they planted nine layers of basaltic rock, to serve as a basis for the structure. Specialties and traditional Canary dishes are offered at the restaurant menu, but the map is only one of the attractions of what the place provides.
