1. Detailed map of the Crete
At first and to start taking your marks, here is a plan of the Crete compared to the Greece so that you can well define its geographical location. Being the largest of the Greek islands, it is also the 5th largest island in the Mediterranean, after the Sicily , Sardinia , Cyprus and Corsica.
Obviously, the Crete remains only an island, and therefore does not own a capital itself. However, Heraklion could be easily considered as such in the eyes of the rest of Europe as it is important for the island. But she is not the only one. Other major cities such as La Canée or Réthymnon also participate in the development of the island.
You can also connect all these cities by the road, making the tour of the main roads that are on the Cretan territory. But, with an extent of 255 km east to west and a width 55 kilometres From north to south, you might lose yourself on the way.
But don't panic! Wanderlix proposes a plan of the Crete, indicating the main roads to be taken and those to be avoided.
2. Map of tourist places
Obviously, when you prepare a trip, you often think that you have to avoid too touristic places and create your own itinerary... But after all, would we not advise a tourist coming to Paris to visit the Eiffel Tower ?
So let yourself be tempted, and take a look at this plan of Crete offering you the main tourist places!
- Ancient sites: in love with ancient history and mythology? We can only recommend you to take a tour of the Minoan palaces Knossos and Phaestostwo wonders that will plunge you into a past full of stories;
- The impossible: if you are looking for an afternoon walk with sublime views and relaxation on the edge of a crystalline water, go to the monastery of Préveli ! It is located a few steps from an incredible beach with the same name, where the river Kourtaliótis flows into the sea for a fabulous show;
- Hiking in the mountains: If you prefer a sports afternoon, you can choose one of the most beautiful hikes in Crete: the Gorges de Samaria ! Located in the heart of the 16-kilometre white mountain range, they will reveal a wild and poetic aspect.
3. Map of airports
There are 3 airports in Crete. The two main ones, La Canée and Heraklion, are the only ones to fly international flights. The third, Sitia, may be used only for internal flights.
Since Crete is one of the most popular destinations in recent years in Europe, we can only recommend you book your tickets in advance. To do this, you can use a flight comparator such as Ulysses and so try to find the offer that will best match you.
4. Map of ports
The plane is not the only way to get to Crete! Obviously, since it is an island you can go there by... boat! And whether by ferry to the largest ports of the island, or by small fishing ports via other Greek islands, the choice is not missing! This is why this plan of the Crete dedicated to its ports can be useful to you.
Among the many ports presented, only 4 host the arrivals and departures of ferries: the port of Heraklion, La Canée, Sitia and that of Rethymnon. Each depends on the choice of your destination, or your starting point, but also on the schedules and dates available.
So to avoid a bad surprise at the time of departure, we recommend you book your tickets in advance. To do this, you can use a crossing comparison and shipping companies such as Direct Ferries and so don't make you surprise once on site.
For other ports, such as Sfakia or Kissamos, there are more pleasure ports, from which you can go for one day or a half day trips.
5. Map of beaches
We're finally here... The map of the beaches! We do not veil the face, this plan of Crete was absolutely indispensable. Because if there is a place in Europe or the beaches compete with each other, it is on Cretan Island.
Here, the white sandy beaches are opposed to those with rosé sand, while the clearest and transparent waters sometimes leave room for the darkest currents! Turning around the beaches of Crete is a real show, an unheard chance, which we can only advise you to seize.
Among all the beaches that are indicated above, the Wanderlix editor has decided to guide you a bit, by offering you our favourite beach: the beach of Élafonissi and its stretch of sand rosé, rocked by crystalline water streams... The ideal place for a romantic afternoon!
