Chang Chui, the unusual spot to get out in Bangkok!

The last-born of Bangkok’s ever-changing night scene is Chang Chui, a creative space for versatile use, where one finds a disused plane in his womb.

Do you have a few days to go to Bangkok and you literally want to get out of the beaten paths? Do you prefer modernity to the historic temples of the Thai capital? Today, in the direction of Chang Chui, an unusual place that has become a must for many Thais. Located on the little-equipped Thonburi shore of the majestic Chaophraya River in Bangkok, Chang Chui is actually much more than just a night market.

Chang Chui, what is it?

Chang Chui , or Chang Chui Plane Night Market , is the name of a new open-air gallery, comprising restaurants, cafes and various shops, all more unusual than others. This eminently modern and very underground place opened its doors just over a year ago. There is still a somewhat intimistic place, especially for its lack of practical access. But Chang Chui won his nobility letters gradually and even appears in the magazine Time among the 100 best places in 2018!

What to do in Chang Chui?

There are lots of things to see and do in Chang Chui, beyond what can be expected to be found in other night markets in Bangkok. It has a much higher-end and refined look than other markets – it’s not a place where we find sellers that sell counterfeit designer items or vintage and retro vintage collection items spread over plastic sheets.

The whole market is well organized and is divided into two areas mainly: the “green zone” without alcohol is open all day from the middle of the morning to the end of the evening, and the “night zone” which opens in the late afternoon and continues until about 23h.

Among the things not to be missed in this creative place is Chang Chui, the bar-restaurant located in a plane carcass (a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar), we still have the bar called "God", whose decoration is entirely made of bondage. To eat, a small tour at the restaurant "Insects in the backyard" will allow you to go beyond your fear or disgust of insects! We can also discover small restaurants offering typical Thai food, but also signs offering big burgers to the American or French recipes.

Many small shops, which give the impression of finding themselves at the flea of Saint-Ouen, also allow to make trendy and very original purchases. Finally, there is also a whole space called “Chui Play” where there are many arcade games. Some will say that it is not the true Bangkok, but it is the best example of the ultra modern and trendy side of the city. Planning a whole evening to discover this place frankly unusual!

When to go to Chang Chui?

Chang Chui is not limited to the opening hours of other night markets in Bangkok. This creative place is open every day of the week except Wednesday. The “green zone” opening from 11am to 9pm and then the “night zone” opened late in the evening from 4pm to 11:00pm. Depending on the areas of the site you want to explore, you can therefore go to Chang Chui at any time.

How to get to Chang Chui?

Chang Chui is located on Sirindhorn Road in the Thonburi peripheral district of Bangkok. We're not gonna lie, Chang Chui is far from the city centre and the subway. Indeed, to get there, the best thing is to take the airline (BTS) to the station Victory Monument , then take a cab by indicating Chang Chui. Some will not know, so you have to tell them that you are going to Bang Bamru train station, which is right next door. The best thing is to take a Uber to avoid losing!
