A Chinese village swallowed by nature
The island of Gouqi belongs to a group of nearly 400 islands known as the Shengsi archipelago, and form part of the Zhoushan archipelago, located outside the Bay of Hangzhou, near the mouth of the famous Yangtze River. This is the largest archipelago in China. Traditionally, Zhoushan put a lot on its primary sector, which is fishing, given that the archipelago is the largest fishing area in China.
Today, with the development of the secondary and tertiary sectors, Zhoushan’s economic base has diversified widely. Between shipbuilding and repair, shipping and tourism, activities have developed to become the main contributors of the local economy. As a result, many fishermen’s villages literally emptied, now left to abandon. Some of the best preserved villages are located on the island of Gouqi (枸杞岛).
The Shengsi Islands are a popular tourist destination and still remain an important fishing area that attracts more than 100,000 fishers every winter. These photos by Jane Qing, a photographer based in Shanghai, takes us to this lost village on the beautiful archipelago. His clichés prove that nature always wins against the work of Man if we leave him time. This village swallowed by greenery is not without recalling the photographic series where nature is seen to regain its rights in the face of civilization.
