History of the Tour Berlin TV

The Berliner Fernsehturm, the German name of the building, which means “the Berlin TV tower”, was built under the aegis of the leaders of the GDR who planned the installation of a technical tower in Berlin, allowing to broadcast television programmes. East-German. After considering the construction on the hills of Müggelberge, it was finally decided to place it on its current site as it might hinder an air corridor! The building was designed by the architect Hemann Henselmann as an arrow to the sky, and erected using the technique of formwork climbing: the internal metal structure is assembled before the concrete layer, which wraps around it. The sphere, raised several hundred meters above the ground, represented a puzzle for engineers and repeatedly failed to sign the failure of the construction!

It began in 1965 to finally end 53 months later, in 1969, which then constituted a record and a real technical prowess. It must be said that the communist leaders wanted, apart from the technical attributes of the building, to prove the power and effectiveness of the political system aligned with Moscow: the famous sphere was a tribute to the Soviet satellites of the Sputnik type, and had to light up in red, which is the color of socialism!

After the fall of the wall and the reunification of the country, voices rose to destroy this high-ranking communist symbol... 368 metres - in 1969, it was the third highest self-porting structure in the world! - but the government preferred to keep what was already and remained, until now, one of the unconditional elements of the city of Berlin and one of its main emblems on the international plane.

What to see and do in the Berlin TV Tower?

The “Telecommunications tower 32” – the official and technical name of the building – is therefore a transmitter used to broadcast programs for several radio and television stations: this is its main function. But she also plays the role of observation tower, with a platform perched at 203 meters and one rotating restaurant . Yes, turning: restaurant Sphere , at 207 meters high, makes a full tour in sixty minutes, which, the time of a meal taken in front of the windows, allows to observe the whole Germanic capital the time of a meal!

You will have understood it, to visit the Berlin TV Tower, it is not only to go in a tour of transmission but in a major tourist attraction, not to miss under any pretext. In addition, it can be arranged marriages and events and many couples privatize the bar to celebrate their weddings! Two lifts with a capacity of twelve people each catapult visitors to highest bar in Berlin 203 meters in less than forty seconds. Here you can enjoy a splendid panoramic view of the Berlin region through sixty windows, and directly access the panoramic restaurant a few meters higher. It is interesting to note that for security reasons and drastic fire standards, the kitchen of the tower is located at the foot of the tower: the dishes are directly powered by an elevator to the restaurant!
