History of the Palace of Caserte

The Reggia di Caserta (Italian) or the royal palace of Caserte was a residence of the royal family of the Bourbons of Naples. The construction of this palace, which constitutes the largest royal residence in the world in terms of volumes, began in 1752 and ended in 1780.

The project was launched under Charles de Bourbon, king of the Two Sicilians, and entrusted to architect Luigi Vanvitelli, with the aim of competing with the Château de Versailles and Royal Palace of Madrid .

The monument is not only a sumptuous 61,000 sqm wide palace, but also a large park and water garden, woods and hunting lodges. It is one of the most sumptuous and visited Italian monuments, whose garden is one of the largest in Campania. The Palace of Caserte and its huge park have been registered since 1997 with UNESCO’s World Heritage. The palace also served as filming places for cinema. Indeed, a few scenes of Star Wars, Mission Impossible and Waterloo were shot in some rooms of the castle!

How do I get to Caserte Palace?

• By car: If you rent a car To go to the Palace Caserte, take the A30 motorway, which will take you about 40 minutes to the Palace of Caserte. You will find a communal parking Palce Carlo III, and many free places in the streets around the station, near the palace.
• By train:
  The train is a fairly simple and fast way to get to the Palace of Caserte from Naples. All you have to do is go to the train station of Napoli Centrale and take the Napoli-Caserta line, for about 6€. The palace is about 400m in front of the station, on the other side of the large Giuseppe Garibaldi square.
• By bus:
  Bus shuttles also exist between Naples and the palace. Count about 15€ the return trip for an adult.
• Excursions:

Schedules and Rates of the Palace of Caserte

HORARI The palace opens 8:30 to 7:30 daily except Tuesday, closing day. Attention, because the park closes earlier depending on the season, i.e. 3 p.m. in winter, 5 p.m. in spring and autumn, 7 p.m. in summer. The English garden closes about 1 hour before the park.
