Visit the Lisbon Oceanarium, the capital’s aquarium

Are you going to Lisbon for the holidays? During your stay, don’t miss visiting the Lisbon Oceanarium, the world’s first aquarium!

The Oceanarium (Oceanário de Lisboa) is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of Lisbon . It is also ranked first aquarium in the world by travellers on TripAdvisor! You can discover an exceptional marine fauna and flora, all in a futuristic building...

Visit the Lisbon Oceanarium: 8,000 animals and 500 marine species!

A huge manta ray (the largest of rays, which can reach up to seven meters!), sharks, a magnificent moonfish, penguins, sea otters, octopuses, turtles, all kinds of fish, jellyfish, plants and multicolored algae... Visiting the Lisbon Oceanarium is discovering 8000 animals, which represent over 500 marine species.

Four ecosystems are represented: North Atlantic Ocean, Indian Ocean, Antarctica and Pacific Ocean... They coexist in the huge central basin, filled with five million litres of water!

Before entering, take the time to admire the building from the outside. Built on the water, it is the work of the architect Peter Chermayeff, who also drew the aquariums of Osaka and Genoa – to name only them.

What to do at the Lisbon Oceanarium?

The Oceanarium was built for the 1998 Universal Exhibition on the theme “Oceans, a heritage for the future”. So, he's aiming to make marine worlds discover... But above all, to raise awareness of the conservation of the oceans.

This dual purpose is reflected in the diversity of activities proposed. In addition to the permanent exhibition, you can visit a temporary exhibition, whose theme changes according to the periods. There are also more unusual activities: for example, you can attend a baby concert in the aquarium, or even, for 60 € per person, sleep one night with sharks!
