History of the Fabre Museum
The Musée Fabre in Montpellier is the city’s main art museum, located in the historic centre, right in front of the Esplanade and right next to the Place de la Comédie .
In 1824, Baron François Xavier, a great artist of painting and collector, offered to donate his collections to the city. It is here that the idea of creating a museum takes shape. The museum opened its doors on 3 December 1828.
Located in the Massilian hotel, a beautiful 18th-century hotel, it took 3 years of work, including to extend the building, incorporating the former Jesuit College dating from the 17th century. All, supervised by the mayor of the city, Baron Fabre, and two great architects of the time, Fovis and Boué.
In 2003, the museum closed its doors for 4 years, for major expansion work. The exhibition spaces range from 3000 to 9000 m2 with: a new temporary exhibition room, a wing dedicated to contemporary painting, the relocation of the library, or the reorganization of the tour circuit.
His public reopening took place on 4 February 2007.
