History of the Eiffel Tower

We're in 1889. The whole Paris celebrates the centenary of the capture of the Bastille during the Universal Exhibition. To the Champ-de-Mars, on the banks of the Seine, the Eiffel Tower stands proudly.

Initially, the government wishes to celebrate the country's freedom and prodigious developments since the Revolution. This must go through the construction of a unique and unrivalled monument, testifying to French industrial know-how. One hundred and seven projects compete. The specifications are strict: a three-cent-metre tower, spurred at the entrance of the Universal Exhibition. This is the project Gustave Eiffel , contractor in the construction of metal bridges, who wins the favors of the jury.

At the beginning of the work, many iconic artists and figures of the 19th century opposed, in their view, this iron monster defiguring Paris and threatening to collapse. However, there is no reluctance to deter Gustave Eiffel and his teams.

Building the Tour-Eiffel: a non-norm project

As expected, after more than two years of work and the work of hundreds of workers, the Lady of Fer made her remarkable entrance. We are March 31, 1889, the day of the Universal Exhibition. When to visit the Iron Lady? Well, all year!

Elevators are accessible from 9:30 to 11:45 . Same for stairs, except from October 19 to November 2 (closed at 6:30 p.m.).
