Ten years ago, in 2009, there was a project to create a cultural and tourist centre of wine, with the aim of building a monument to value the "transmission, valorization and preservation of the cultural, universal and living heritage of wine". The site for the realization of such a monument was the site of the ancient forges of the large seaport of the city, between the dock Bacalan and the Garonne.
The building was designed by the XTU architects’ office, and was built between June 2013 and May 2016, until a work with round shapes, thoughts to impress a vine vine vine with the Garonne’s whirlpools. The edifies has a 300-piece frame (50 to 120 cm in diameter) planted up to 30 meters deep in the ground.
In addition, the structure consists of 9,000 m 3 concrete, covered by 918 tricolor glass panels (light glass, grey and golden) and 2,300 aluminum panels. On the ground floor, the free access space was designed in a rounded form, under a ceiling set at 4 meters high. Above all, this level contains a collection of 9,752 bottles of wine from 88 different countries.
Three years after its opening to the public, the monument is frequently evoked by the city council of Bordeaux to enhance the image and communication of the city.
