Built on a rock in 1358 to bring back the enemies in the middle of the Cent Years War, Chantilly Castle reinvented itself over the ages. The illustrious family des Montmorency became owner of the building in the 15th century. This makes it possible to enlarge the Domaine with a pleasure castle in the style of the Renaissance. The royal power then decided to confiscate the castle to make it twelve years later in Charlotte de Montmorency, wife of the Prince of Condé. The son of the couple, the “Grand Condé” makes Domaine de Chantilly a second royal court and asks the famous landscaper of Versailles, Le Nôtre, to set up the gardens.

The Bourbon-Condé line went off during the Revolution. Henri d’Orléans, Duke of Aumale, is in fact appointed heir to the Domaine. In these conditions, it reconstructs the parts of the castle destroyed and installs collections of paintings and books. Since the Duke’s death in 1898, the Château de Chantilly became the “Condémusée” and opened to visitors.
