Decebal (or Decebalus the brave ) was the last king of Dacie (or Dacia in Romanian). He was also one of the most powerful sovereigns of this ancient kingdom. After the reunification of the dace tribes so far divided, he fought in three wars against two Roman emperors, before finally succumbing to the power of Rome in 106 AD.

The national identity of modern Romania is still firmly anchored in its former dace heritage. This monumental stone portrait of Decebal was designed by Iosif Constantin Dragan a Romanian businessman and historian. It is located on the Romanian side of the Danube, right in front of the Tabula Traiana a memorial to the Roman conquest of the emperor Trajan in 100-103 (ap. JC) against the Dacia (the Trajan Table is a Latin inscription dedicated to the emperor Trajan, engraved on a specially cut rocky wall, overlooking the Iron doors ). He's 40 meters tall. highest rock carved in Europe and it took 10 years (1994-2004) for a team of twelve sculptors to complete this work.

The inscription on the statue is, ironically, written in Latin, the language introduced in Romania by the enemies of Decebal. You can read "DECEBALUS REX – DRAGAN FECIT" ("King Decebalus – Directed by Drăgan"). This huge statue would have cost almost €750,000.
