Visit Tropea, its cliffs and beaches on the coast of Calabraise
Tropea is a seaside resort located in the region of Calabria , near Vibo Valentia, in the south of Italy . The city is perched at the top of an imposing cliff in the Gulf of Sainte-Euphemia, which faces the Tyrrhenian Sea. This part of the coast is called Costa degli Dei , Coast of the Gods , and it is one of the most beautiful summer holiday destinations in Italy. With spectacular cliffs overlooking a crystal clear blue sea and sunny beaches, Tropea is a famous place to swim. Although it is not particularly known to foreign travellers, Tropea is popular among Italians.

The city is a curious maze of pretty little streets and squares. The paved streets are lined with old blonde stone buildings and at various points, stairs descend to the beaches located below. In clear weather, you can easily see the volcanic island of Stromboli from the seafront promenade and it is possible to book a boat trip there for the day.
The most famous site of Tropea is the large rocky grove that advances in the sea a few hundred meters from the city. At the top is the monastery of Santa Maria dell’Isola built in the 7th century. Other buildings deserve a visit like the beautiful Norman Cathedral and churches San Francesco and Santa Maria della Neve . If you explore the streets you will find traces of the old city wall and the fortifications that defended it on the land side.

Legend wants Tropea to have been founded by Hercule when he returned after completing one of his 12 works. Historical documents indicate, however, that Scipion the African , who returned victorious from the battle of Zama (202 BC, near Carthage), founded a city and offered it as a trophy of gratitude to the gods for victory, from which the city took its name. The region was populated from the Neolithic, and was repeatedly occupied by the Arabs, the Normans, the Swabians, the Anjous and the Aragonese, and was attacked by Turkish pirates.
In addition to tourism, one of the main resources in the city of Tropea is the famous onion red Say Cipolla Rossa di Tropea Calabria which obtained a controlled label of origin.
