One first: this giant tree had never been photographed in full
The "President" is presented to you. This giant sequoia of Sequoia National Park in California is more than 3200 years old, has more than 2 billion leaves and is 74 meters high. The portrait of the giant tree, taken by the National Geographic, is actually a mosaic, composed of 126 photographs to capture the tree in its entire length.
The “President” is in no way the largest tree in the world, this honor is for a sequoia sempervirent (or Séquoia with leaves of fif), which is 116 meters high, but in terms of mass, it is one of the largest. “We know that there are trees that have larger trunks, but when you add all the wood in addition to the main trunk, all the roots, all the branches, all the biomass above the ground, this tree is likely the largest” , said Steve Sillett of the State University of Humboldt.
The magnificent view of the tree was presented on a five-page leaflet in the December 2012 edition of the National Geographic.
"The reason we want to make these portraits, people understand it. When they see the tree in its entirety without distortion, they have the breath cut » , says photographer Michael Nichols.
It took a team of photographers to assemble 126 shots captured with 3 different devices for 32 shooting days. Giant sequoias live at high altitudes and can support the cold, abundant snow and even lightning strokes.
