The culinary specialties of Nepal

Discover Nepalese cuisine

Nepal’s cuisine is not as popular as Indian cuisine, but it remains interesting. Nepalese cuisine is like the country’s rich and varied geographical diversity. The very arid regions of the Himalayan summits sometimes subtropical allow all kinds of agriculture and culinary specialties.

Nepalese cuisine, like Indian cuisine, is mainly made up of vegetarian dishes in which rice and lentils are the flagship ingredients of a dish. With its Indian and Tibetan influences, Nepalese cuisine is full of treats.

The Dal bhat , is the national dish Nepal . Composed of white rice, lentils and vegetables in sauce, this dish is served in a plate accompanied by several small containers. Also known as "thali" by the Newars (first inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley), the Dal bhat consumes at any time of the day both by the locals and by the tourists. More or less spicy, the Dal bhat cooks differently depending on the region and tastes, so it is very unlikely to fall on a single recipe.

More than a national dish, the Dal bhat is almost the unique dish of the Nepalese day. It can be accompanied by pork, chicken, lamb and beef meats while the vegetables are mostly curry and chili. A real institution in Nepal, the Dal bhat is also the only dish that is served at will in all restaurants... This is a real good plan for gourmets but also for gourmets!

Nepalese cuisine also varies according to its ethnic groups, for example, newars offer a much more varied recipe because in the regions of Kathmandu and Pokhara, agricultural production is very profitable compared to other more isolated regions. As in Indian cuisine, dishes are often accompanied by local bread.

The cake Paratha based on flour is very consumed in Nepal, just like the Tibetan bread who, unlike the cake, is fried. It eats in the morning at breakfast with jam or sugar, or accompaniment.

This is not a unique case, Nepalese cuisine is strongly influenced by its neighbour, Tibet. It is not uncommon to consume yak meat, yak milk or yogurt in the Himalayas. Very arid region of Nepal, the Himalayas has its own cuisine and its own specialities. For example, due to their cold resistance, cereals such as buckwheat or barley are processed into noodles, flour and even alcoholic beverages.

As tasty as well as famous, mummo often attract the crowd of tourists in Kathmandu's alleys. Despite their modest appearance, these little bites are a treat for taste buds, which even taste beyond Nepalese borders. The mummo boasts all the flavors of the Himalayas, and leave no tourist indifferent. In addition, these little culinary wonders can also delight the sweet mouths, because stuffed with apple and cinnamon, these sweet ravioli become a dessert. With an ice cream, a delight!
