The beaches of Sicily where to swim without tourists

Are you looking for beaches in Sicily with hot and crystalline water away from mass tourism? Here are the best beaches of Sicily where to swim quietly!

Sicily is one of Europe’s most popular summer tourist destinations and millions of travelers go there every year. The largest island of the Mediterranean, separated from the continent by the Strait of Messina at the end of Calabria in Italy, Sicily is indeed a high place of the seaside, natural and cultural tourism. The best time to visit Sicily is undoubtedly the spring and back summer season (September-October) and the island is literally crowded in the summer. If you come in August, you should know that there are nevertheless beautiful coves and beaches in Sicily where to swim without walking on, towel on towel. Don’t forget your mask and tuba (to see the fish and alas, make sure that you’re not in trouble) and enjoy a warm sea at about 26°C average in August.

If you like crystalline and turquoise waters veering green, target pebble beaches, which offer much more clarity to the seabed than sand. Finding a beach in isolated Sicily remains possible. We went there in August 2018, in the spotlight of the deserted beaches where to cool down: here is our top of the beaches of Sicily where to swim without tourists.

1. San Marco

This beach is literally deserted in the morning and it is large enough not to walk on it. Located north of the city of Acireale, a few kilometers south of the famous ancient village of Taormina , we access it by borrowing the Lungomare Cottone, following the small road after the restaurant "Blue Ice". The beach is a long and wide strip of pebbles, with even a few waves and to the west, a beautiful view on the falsely peaceful slopes of the Etna. Here, you will not have any tourists – they are all on the beaches of Naxos and Taormina – and will be sure that the crossed people are locals. We advise you to come early in the morning if you come to visit Sicily in the summer: in addition to swimming on a beautiful beach in Sicily before the heat of a summer day, you will not pay your parking space if you arrive before 9 o’clock!

2. Bue Marino Beach

Located on the busy peninsula of San Vito Lo Capo, west of Palermo , here is an ideal place to swim quietly, without fighting to find a place. We have seen that most of the tourists are climbing on the beach of San Vito lo Capo, a beach in the allure of tropical countries to the north of the peninsula, so that between the parasols and the sunbeds, we don’t even see the sea so much there is a world: the Var coast, next to it, is not crowded... We were looking for peaceful Sicily beaches and fell on Bue Marino Beach, taking the road to Macari and Trapani (West Coast of the peninsula).

By descending the heights of the cape, a large free parking is located along the via Cristoforo Colombo . From there, go on foot to the small limestone rock coves and the large public baths: the area is frequented in the day, but you can easily sneak between the small coves and find a peaceful place to stroll, picnic, jump or dive, swim quietly. You can even spend the night on the parking lot by camping wild (provided to leave the places clean and without detritus, which seems rare in Sicily) : the riders will enjoy ! It was our heart of the beaches of Sicily.

3. Zingaro Nature Reserve

On the other side of the San Vito Lo Capo peninsula is the park of the Zingaro Nature Reserve. Referred to in all travel guides, it is located on the towns of Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo and forms a 7-kilometre coast on which you can hike and access the beaches. The arrival by car, on a sinuous pass, offers a splendid view of the Tyrrhenian coast. Entrance to the park costs 5 € per person but it is worth it. The first beach – Cala Tonnarella dell’Uzzo – may seem crowded but as you walk along the coast (towards Scopello), the affluence declines and you find small rocks where you lie to swim in a sublime water, mixed with green and turquoise blue. We tested the beach Cala dell’Uzzo : it is certainly not a deserted beach, but the decor is simply sumptuous. By swimming at the end of the beach, you can take a relaxing break in a small cave away from all tourists and boats.

4. Zingarello

Looking for a beautiful beach in Sicily? A few kilometers from archaeological site of Agrigento , is a small Sicilian village that no tourist seems to know : Zingarello. San Leone and Fiumerano are two neighboring villages by the sea with crowded beaches, while Zingarello has a long sandy beach without tourists, at the foot of large cliffs: peaceful and relaxed atmosphere guaranteed, where you can even enjoy a sublime sunset at the top of the parking lot, on a promontory overlooking the beach. Here, no tourists, only locals: this is the famous Scala dei Turchi but without the tourist affluence!
