Road trip to La Gomera: itinerary for 1 and 2 weeks

We invite you to explore one of the most wild and unrecognized islands in the Canary Islands with this road trip to La Gomera tailored to suit.

Are there fans of outdoor activities in the audience? If so, then La Gomera is an ideal playground for you. Located near Tenerife, in the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, “the green island” is perhaps the least known of its neighbours.

Particularly preserved, it offers an impressive biosphere and unusual landscapes. Indeed, the volcanic cliffs are close to the green valleys. The change is therefore guaranteed!

In this road trip to La Gomera that we have prepared for you, you will have the chance to make a full tour of the island. Notez Moreover, infrastructure is particularly limited to maintain its balance. So you will have to think about booking your accommodation in advance in high season. Also, roads are sometimes windy and difficult: make sure you have a suitable vehicle.

1. From San Sebastián de la Gomera...

  • 📷 To be visited: Torre del Conde, San Sebastián beach, Punta de San Cristobal and its lighthouse
  • Where to stay: One night on a boat in the port

Our road trip to La Gomera begins in the village of San Sebastián de la Gomera, which is also the capital of the island. This is where you will come, in theory, if you take a ferry from Tenerife. And know that when you arrive at San Sebastián de la Gomera, you follow the traces of a certain Christopher Columbus! Indeed, the explorer made some stopovers in the city during his trips.

At the right port, go towards the old town to imbue yourself with the island cultural heritage. Flip into the typical little streets and rest with some local delights.

Moreover, among the must-see visits to the city, there is obviously the Torre del Conde . This tower was built between 1447 and 1450 by the Count of La Gomera. It was also inside that many Spanish people had fled during the rebellions on the island.

After this first visit, you can relax at the sandy beach (but black, car volcanic!). After a swim session, join the San Cristobal lighthouse at sunset to enjoy a beautiful light (if the sky is clear).

To deepen the stage:

  • The chapels of San Sebastián and the Virgin of Guadalupe;
  • The archaeological museum to learn more about heritage.
  • Rent a car in La Gomera

2. Discover the Garajonay National Park

  • 🗺 in Itinerary: San Sebastián de la Gomera at Garajonay National Park (Arrival to El Cedro Tunnel)
  • 📍 Traject: 14.2 km • 18 min
  • 📷 To be visited: El Cedro, Chorros del Cedro, Reventón Oscuro, Las Roquas, mirador del Morro de Agando, mirador de Tajaqué, Alto de Garajonay, the Lady of Lourdes chapel
  • Where to stay: Traditional house with a nice view of the park

For this second day of road trip in La Gomera, we recommend you discover the Garajonay National Park. Declared as a heritage of Humanity in 1986 and then officialized as a national park in 2003, it covers almost 10% of the island with its surface of about 4 000 hectares . So you'll have something to do! Also note that you will find one of the most preserved “laurisylve” wet forests of clouds. Europe . This natural treasure was abundant there during the Tertiary.

So sock your best shoes and go to the conquest of this lush nature through one of the Ten eight Possible paths. Some of them are more difficult than others: we recommend that you get in advance to choose the trekking that best fits your level.

Among the must-sees in Garajonay Park, there is the Reventón Oscuro : trails in the middle of the forest that will cross wooded areas and the famous cloud forest. One of the paths leads to the stream El Cedro then to the waterfall Chorros del Cedro .

We also recommend you stop at the different “miradors” of the park to enjoy incredible views. El Mirador del Morro de Agando offers a particularly interesting panorama on Las Roquas : a set of rocks. Try to find Agando’s rock: an ancient volcanic chimney solidified with time... A few kilometres away, there is a second observation point: the Tajaqué mirador. You'll be almost up to the clouds.

But the most beautiful from the point of view, in our opinion, remains the Alto de Garajonay The summit of La Gomera! You can even see Tenerife and other parts of the archipelago if the sky is clear.

To deepen the stage:

  • Cedar and noisy trails to the Lady of Lourdes chapel.

3. Following visits to Hermigua and Vallehermoso

  • 🗺 in Itinerary: Garajonay National Park in Vallehermoso, including El Cedro, Hermigua, Agulo
  • 📍 Traject: 44.9 km • 1h40
  • 📷 To be visited: downtown Hermigua, mirador de la Orilla, Agulo (mirador et punta), Vallehermoso, Roque El Cano, Playa de Vallehermoso
  • Where to stay: Charming room in a traditional guest house

Our third stage is still in the Garajonay National Park. This time we take you to Hermigua's side. This small town is located in the richest water valley of the island. It is therefore surrounded by a wonderful nature in the colours of an impressionist painting.

Start with a walk in the alleys of the village to admire the traditional canarian houses of the eighteenth century. Then take the road further north to discover Pescante de Hermigua : a magical place with rocky pillars, and in the center a magnificent natural swimming pool. Do not hesitate to climb on the nearby Mirador, Orilla, to have a high view on the bay.

Then take the road again by stopping at Agulo, another unmistakable town on a road trip to La Gomera. Founded in 1607, it seems almost suspended in time! You will find small establishments to restore you, but also walks to do over a few hours. Go, for example, to the mirador of Agulo to enjoy a nice panoramic view.

And as for her neighbor Hermigua, head to the coast on the Punta Agulo to discover ancient ruins on a historic site, and impressive cliffs.

To complete this step (which you can divide in several days if you want to take your time!), take the direction of Vallehermoso . Located north of the island, Vallehermoso , “the beautiful valley”, carries its name extremely well.

Indeed, through paths, you will have the opportunity to discover mountainous landscapes and the Roque El Cano : a huge volcanic rock erected on one of the hills around the town. And if you want to refresh yourself and enjoy hot water, take a ride to the beach Vallehermoso !

To deepen the stage:

  • The Gofio Museum and the ethnographic park in Hermigua;
  • The church of San Juan Bautista and the Calle Mayor in the center of Vallehermoso.
  • Rent a car in La Gomera

4. Los Órganos: the north of the island

  • 🗺 in Itinerary: de Vallehermoso à Los Órganos, en passant par Arguamul
  • 📍 Traject: 25 km • 1h06
  • 📷 To be visited: the beach of Arguamul, sea organs
  • Where to stay: La Casa Rural de Arguamul with a beach view

Ready to go back? On this part of the journey, you will have to have some patience because the paths are mountainous, and therefore very sinuous. You will also have to walk to the beach.

You will cross the northeast part of the park to get to Arguamul. This name, almost out of a Tolkien novel, refers to an incredible beach that must be discovered during a road trip to the Gomera. With its kilometer long and its width of 12 meters, this beach of small gravel seems virgin and isolated. Do not hesitate to explore the small hamlet which is a few steps from the beach, as stuck between the sea and the mountain.

Then take the steering wheel back to the Los Órganos . This natural monument of volcanic origin owes its sobriquet to pipes and columns, which represent an organ. You can park nearby then see this Mother Nature work directly from the sea, during a boat ride. Indeed, many local agencies offer this must-see tour to the Gomera!

To deepen the stage:

  • Salt and caress the nose of the Buddha of Arguamul (and admire the view!).

5. Get down to Valle Gran Rey

  • 🗺 in Itinerary: de Los Órganos à Valle Gran Rey, en passant par Alojera et Arure
  • 📍 Traject: 46.4 km • 1h33
  • 📷 To be visited: the Chorros of Epina, the village of Alojera and its beach, Arure, the center of Valle Gran Rey and its coast
  • Where to stay: A beautiful apartment with sea view

This final stage of our road trip to La Gomera is particularly interesting as it makes you cross the island from north to south.

After leaving the region Vallehermoso and Argula, we invite you to lead you to Chorros de Epina : a beautiful place on the edge of nature, and from which you can take a walk through one of the trails. The highlight of the show: the small jets of drinking water where you can refresh yourself!

After this first discovery, resume your vehicle to explore Alojera. There, all west of La Gomera, you will find a small village nestled in a palm grove.

It is also in this place of La Gomera that there would be the most beautiful rocky beaches, and especially the wildest. After a dip in calm and serenity, go and admire the view from the Mirador de Alojera.

Then, on the road towards Valle de Gran Rey , pass through the village of Arure where vegetation is particularly lush. Ideal to take the air so, and take a well-deserved break on this road that sometimes turns out a little capricious.

To finish this stage, you will be expected to Valle Gran Rey a place that owes its name to Chief Guanche Hupalupa. Over there, you will be particularly overwhelmed because Valle Gran Rey is probably the most exotic part of the island. Peated with banana plantations, this commune flows into the ocean to Puntilla. So you will have all the leisure to practice hiking, but also to swim in a fabulous setting.

Visit one of the coastal restaurants to admire a beautiful sunset, facing the sea, glass by hand. You can also boat to explore the surroundings.

To deepen the stage:

  • La Casa de Miel de Palma Alojera;
  • The Barranco de Arure to see the cascade;
  • Explore the Puntilla to Valle Gran Rey.
  • Rent a car in La Gomera

6. End the trip to Playa de Santiago

  • 🗺 in Itinerary: La Valle Gran Rey in the Playa de Santiago, including El Cercado and Alajeró
  • 📍 Traject: 48,7 km • 1h13
  • 📷 To be visited: the pottery of El Cercado, the Playa de Santiago and the seabed, Alajeró
  • Where to stay: Bel hotel with garden near the sea

Our route is coming to an end! And to finish this road trip in La Gomera as it should be, we offer you to reach the south of the island: Playa de Santiago .

From Valle Gran Rey , you can take the road GM-1 who will take you away from the coast to take you to the land. Attention, however, to the many corners: roll slowly.

Before arriving at your final destination, we recommend you stop at El Cercado. This small village is especially renowned for its pottery. So you can admire the work of local artisans, but also enjoy yourself or enjoy your entourage by bringing back some objects. Don’t hesitate to stroll around this tiny town in the centre of La Gomera.

After this stage, the road will take you back to the coast, south of La Gomera. There is a small seaside resort that belongs to the commune of Alajeró. Peasted by about 2,000 inhabitants, it was filled during the summer season. But reassure yourself: the place remains authentic and disappointing.

Put your towel on the black sandy beach (volcanic) and enjoy a sunbath to remember the beautiful memories of this trip to La Gomera. Also, Playa de Santiago is an ideal spot for scuba diving or snorkeling thanks to its many caves and marine biodiversity.

Note further that Playa de Santiago is located 3 kilometres from the airport, as well as near the port. The place is therefore ideal to finish your adventure and return home easily!

To deepen the stage:

  • A walk in the town of Alajeró (before arriving at the beach);
  • The Barranco Trail of Santiago.
