Poveglia is a small island near Venice which was used as a quarantine island for nearly 160,000 people with plagues from 1793 to 1814. Common pits of the plague victims were found there. Napoleon also used it to store weapons. To top it all, from 1922 to 1968 there was a psychiatric hospital with a doctor whose rumour says he tortured and killed many patients.
