Maulévrier Park: the largest Japanese park in Europe

The eastern park of Maulévrier in Maine-et-Loire

What if you discover the calm and serenity of Nippone... in France? With Maulévrier Park, you will be able to walk in what is probably the largest Japanese park in Europe .

The history of the park

The park of Maulévrier has existed since the beginning of the 20th century: it is the architect Alexandre Marcel which decided to mix with subtlety the pictorial art of Japanese and Orientalism in a place dedicated entirely to this fascinating universe that is the Japanese garden.

While the garden, which has undergone multiple transformations of the architect’s life, such as the creation of a pond and the addition of exotic plants, has fallen into disuse for nearly 40 years, it is in 1987 that the 30 hectares of the site are officially recognized as being inspired by Japanese gardens by experts and university professors.

Propelled to escape, calm, relaxation, dreaming and meditation, the park of Maulévrier allows you to discover a flora extremely rich with nearly 400 species of trees, shrubs and plants like chamelas, rhododendrons, Japanese maples, bonsai, Chinese larchs, aucubas, etc.

You will also find a pagoda, water plans, a red bridge, a temple. One discovery zen for the whole family.

A symbolic park

The park of Maulevrier does not leave anyone indifferent: whether or not you are a follower of Zen Buddhism, you are happily struck by this atmosphere so sereine . The water circulates from east to west throughout the park to evoke the race of the sun and the life of men. The two islands on the site, namely the island of Grue and the island of Tortue, are named to evoke the principle of yin and yang, between balance and harmony.

L’ water is the main element of the eastern park of Maulevrier, about three tenths of the total surface of the site: through the different streams of water, a transformation and evolution of life on earth, whether for plants, animals or for humans, but also the course of the seasons, or elements.

In practice

The park’s visit is valid all year round and it is even possible to make guided and nocturnal visits between May and September from 9:00 pm. The rate is 7 euros for adults, 6 euros for 12-18 years and free for under 12 years.

Do not forget to discover also the greenhouse Eastern park with sale of bonsai and other exotic plants, to take a tour at the tea lounge or to discover the park shop. One. Beautiful floral park breathing serenity. Perfect for lovers of photography and painting but also for simply relaxing the time of a vivid breathing.
