The famous stone arch of Gozo Island in Malta was carried away by a violent storm this Wednesday, March 8.
You'll have to learn to do without it. The very beautiful limestone arch called "Azure Window" has not resisted the strong storm that had already fallen for several days on the northern part of the Maltese archipelago.
Neither the bridge nor the pile of the ark did the weight in the face of an unleashed sea and powerful waves. The structure that was to form it to the natural erosion of the stone has now joined the entire ocean.
The jewel of the island of Gozo
The French Window was part of the most popular attractions small island. Many travellers went there every year to admire it and take a picture in front of this beautiful limestone arch. A show that will be missing in Malta.
Prime Minister Joseph Muscat spoke on Twitter to express his sadness in the face of the disappearance of this small piece of emblematic nature.
Shot locations of many movies
Several shootings have helped make the Azure Window famous around the world. This is especially the case of films The Choc of the Titans (1982) or The Vengeance of Monte Cristo (2002). More recently, this is the series Games of Thrones which offered this magnificent panorama during an episode of his first season.
A controversy had existed about this shooting, some environmental movements denouncing the damage caused by the team of Games of Thrones on the environment of the island of Gozo.
A predictable collapse
One of the blocks of Azure Window had already cracked in 2012 and had caused a first collapse due to stone erosion. Several reports also indicated that the ark would suffer greatly from this phenomenon of natural corrosion and would eventually disappear. This sad event occurred earlier than expected and leaves the inhabitants of Malta and all lovers of the island orphaned by a wonder of nature.
