You can stay in Tromsø in the neighborhoods of Bjerkeker and Strandkanten, southeast of the city. These are places that are very well served by public transport. Here you will be near the botanical gardens and the university museum, as well as the Polaria, the aquarium of the city. Hotel facilities are less numerous than in the centre, but you can find some accommodation for rent.
