Going to the discovery of Eastern Europe, Bulgaria, the last Balkan country? This is where to sleep in Sofia!
Considered as the last most east of the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria is one of the 28 member countries of the European Union, bordered by the Black Sea and the Danube. Sharing its borders with Greece, Turkey, Romania, Serbia and Macedonia, Bulgaria is capital Sofia, to the west of the country and is a trendy tourist destination, between Greek, Turkish and Slavic culture. At the foot of Mount Vitocha, Sofia has 1.3 million inhabitants and is the fourth largest city in the Balkans after Istanbul, Athens and Bucharest. The political, industrial, commercial, economic, educational and cultural centre of the country, Sofia also has an important historical heritage.
Due to the opening of low-cost lines, it is cheap to get to Sofia to visit the city from Lyon, Paris or London and 6.5 million people landed or transited to the Bulgarian capital airport in 2016. Prices are not high, but staying in Sofia can be expensive, depending on the area chosen.
The city of Sofia is 180 km2 but as in all capitals, there are many residential areas where nothing is going on, most of the things to do being in the city centre. This is in which quarter to stay in Sofia.
Downtown
The centre is centred around Slivnitsa boulevards and Evlogi i Hristo Georgiev boulevards. Old wooden trams, old buildings of the Soviet era, ancient mosques transformed into Orthodox churches, places disguised by night out: the modern Sofia closes the old, between the narrow streets and the new. The neighborhood is crossed by a very commercial street: the Boulevard “Vitosha”, often called Vitoshka, which stretches to Yushen Park. This long boulevard concentrates shops, restaurants and bars in large numbers. The city centre houses some tourist buildings and religious buildings, including the Basilica of St. Sophia (the largest Byzantine basilica), the church of St. George, the church of Boyana, the mosque Bania Bachi, the synagogue of Sofia. If you like cultural visits, do not miss the National Gallery of Fine Arts, the National Museum of Natural History, the Ivan Vazov Museum, the Museum of Paleontology and Geology, etc. There is everything to enjoy a cultural stay, party, live in Bulgarian and stay in Sofia in a central position.

It is a very cultural and student neighbourhood, including the Little City Theatre “Off the Channel”, the National Music Academy – if you are an expatriate and musician – the National Museum of War History. Finally, the Park Knyaz-Borisova Gradina (Борисова градина), the oldest park in Sofia and one of the largest, to feel like in the countryside.

Studentski Grad
Studentski Grad means “the city of students”: it’s the university campus district, today it welcomes almost 40,000 people. We'll have the feeling of leaping back, before 1991, in buildings of the communist period. As a student, nightlife is as dynamic as it is festive. We are far from the centre, but if we are young, it is the neighborhood where to stay in Sofia to live like local youth.
