Located on the axis between the Atlantic, Toulouse and the Mediterranean Sea, and 25 kilometers from the foothills of the Pyrenees massif, Pau has been the capital of Béarnaise since 1464 and the Prefecture of the Pyrenees-Atlantiques department. The city is located only 50 kilometres from the Spanish border, with a unique panorama of the Pyrenees and the Jurançon vineyards. Founded in the 12th century, the city is nevertheless occupied from the Gallo-Roman era, and developed around its castle – which saw the birth of the King of France Henri IV – whose first construction dates back to the 10th century. Seat of the kingdom of Navarre in the 16th century, Pau was a leading political, intellectual and cultural centre in the early 16th century. Rich aristocratic city attracting British, Russian, Spanish and American to the Belle Époque, Pau becomes a world capital of aeronautics and petrochemicals.
Today, the city has 78,000 inhabitants, and 200,000 people in the urban area. Are you staying in Pau for work or holidays? Discover with us the mini-guide of the areas where to sleep in Pau!
Downtown
The town centre of Pau covers several mini-neighborhoods, including that of the castle, the Hedas , Halles, Triangle and City Paul-Doumer .
Several historical monuments inherit the soil of the historic centre, including Pau castle – and the statue of Fébus, with the view of the Pyrenees -, which dominates the Gave. If you love religious buildings, enter the churches Saint-Martin and Saint-Jacques , both built in the 1860s. Attach yourself to the many restaurants in the city centre to taste the gastronomy of Bearnese and local products – pot chicken, garbure, Bayonne ham, Pyrenees cheese, Jurançon wines - and then enjoy the museums (if you like culture): the national museum of the castle of Pau, the museum Bernadotte , memorial of Resistance and Deportation, and Museum of Fine Arts . To stroll, go to the park Casino of Pau , east of downtown.
80% of the accommodations in Pau are apartments, but obviously there are hotels that decline all the comfort ranges. The centre is the best place to sleep in Pau.

Trespoey
Trespoey , east of the city centre, is the easy area of Pau. There are bourgeois villas, built at the Belle Époque: the area is taken from the rich wintering. Along a ridge line overlooking the Gave, you can admire a breathtaking view of the majestic chain of the Pyrenees. We are located close to the city centre and the Pau Casino and its green space. However, rents may be higher due to the sociology of the inhabitants.
