In which quarter house in Patras?

Are you going to discover Greece and the famous Peloponnese peninsula? This is the area where Patras is staying!

Fourth city of Greece with 167,446 inhabitants (2011), Patras is located north of the Peloponnese in the ancient region of Achaia. It is also the capital of the most famous carnival of Greece. Resolutely vibrant, young, festive and dynamic, Patras is the main port of the Ionian islands, from which one goes to visit Zakynthos , Cephalonia Delph or Olympie.

Patras is unrecognized by the general public, but still has many assets to offer to its guests: a Greece out of the beaten paths, strong Venetian and Byzantine identities, an impressive cultural heritage. A small town formed around seven villages under Antiquity, then occupied by the Venetians and the Byzantines, Patras’ past is a mixture of pain and prosperity that is more than 3,000 years old. Named the “Western Gate of Greece”, Patras is one of the poorest cities in the country despite its industrial and commercial basin.

The city subdivides between a low city, harbour and merchant, and a high city, where the multi-millennial castle is found. Here are the areas to sleep in Patras.

The old town and the castle – the kastro - built by the Byzantines, overlook the city. The main part of the city is built on the hillside and is therefore on the slope: arm yourself with good shoes! The old quarter, on the heights, is named Kampielo. It allows beautiful walks in the narrow alleys, sprinkled with traditional Greek houses and decorated with arcades.

Visit the fortress, the church Pantokratoras – an Orthodox church of the 19th century, in an Ionian style located on Pantokratoros Street -, the ancient Roman odeon (from the 1st century, the oldest ancient monument of Patras), and finish with the kastro , the Château de Patras, erected majesticly at the foot of Mount Panachaiko. It was built in the 6th century on the ruins of the ancient Acropolis (destructed by a earthquake in 551) under the impulse of the Emperor Justinian. Norther, the Archaeological Museum is a must-see visit to the city: it is the second largest museum in Greece, retracing the history of the city, from the Prehistory to the Roman era.

Good to know. : With few hotels in Kampielo, you can opt for a homestay.

Lower town is the neighborhood of old-port the modern city. By descending the stairs of Saint-Nicolas – picturesque and offering a superb view of the city, the sea and the mountains, especially at the time of sunset - you can reach the streets leading to port, with many restaurants, bars and cafes.

The city centre has beautiful pedestrian alleys built by damier, living on the day and night: shopkeepers in the day, they begin to live from 18 hours of a crowd of young and festive noctambules. Along the harbour, explore the Basilica Saint-André (dating from 1974), the largest church in Greece and the second in the Balkans. Other attractions of the neighborhood are the famous haubans bridge, the Rion-Antirion Bridge , the third longest hauban bridge in the world with its 2,883 meters, put into service in 2004 to connect the Peloponnese to the Continental Greece.

By choosing to stay in Patras in the low city, you will have access to all the shops, to all the night and day trips, at the foot of the hotel where to sleep.
