The historic centre
A former Algarve capital between 1576 and 1756, the old town of Lagos, enclosed in its fortifications, preserved what its hosts call a picturesque charm. A town fortified by the Moors from North Africa, Lagos became a leading shopping centre in the 14th century thanks to its maritime position (it was at the port of Lagos that the first slaves were brought back to Europe to be sold on the first market to the slaves opened in 1444). Lagos then played a leading role in the "great discoveries" period. The result is a particular architecture, especially at the church level.
In the center, the church Santo Antonio, the Fortaleza da Ponta da Bandeira and the Castelo dos Governadores are unmissable visits. Many bars and restaurants allow you to enjoy the sun terraces before leaving for the coastal roads: many beaches open to the barder that, with the cribs and steep cliffs, go to the tip of Ponta da Peidade. Ponta da Peidade is a natural monument made of rocks and cliffs by the imprecations of time. It is said of Lagos that it has some of the most beautiful beaches of Portugal, and even Europe! In addition, most of the hotels in Lagos are in the city centre.

Ameijeira
To the south of the centre is a long beach and sand cord, in a district called Ameijeira. This is a good alternative to the old tourist center if you do not want to stay in Lagos and be dependent on a fixed accommodation. On the side of Ameijeira, is the famous cove of Praia do Camilo, near Praia Dona Ana . The beach appears in all the guides, which consider it one of the most beautiful in the region. The cove is tight, there are few places to go, but it is worth a look.

Porto de Mos
The small town in the south-west of the city centre is home to one of the jewels of Lagos: Praia Porto de Mos. Surrounded by high cliffs, the beach is a long tongue of golden sand and wet by calm waters tinted with blue and green. To the west, you can hike to the Mirador de Atalaia, and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the city of Luz.
You understood it, Porto de Mos is more than a beautiful place to stay in Lagos. This is a must-see!

Meia Praia
In the east of Lagos, Meia Praia – accessible by train – offers a paradise for tourists: accommodations and hotels where to stay, a wide beach almost lost of sight and waters so calm that we would almost believe in a lagoon, it has everything to seduce swimers. The good point is that there is paradoxically little world compared to its dimensions. It will therefore be ideal to look for accommodation next to it if you are looking for peace and tranquility.
